New Tire for my Harley

So several months ago a Harley dealer which newly established itself sent out an offer. If you come by and take a tour they will give you a coupon to get a free brand new stock tire and installation for free. Sounded excellent to me as long as they change out my back 240 tire which is stock for my bike.

So I took the tour and got the coupon. Now it had to be used prior to March 1st 2011. So I waited until the last possible moment to get the most our of my current tire. Last possible day was this past Saturday February 26th since the dealer is closed on Sunday and Monday.

We've had pretty cold and snowy weather the past week and Saturday was no different. It was below freezing and after bundling up in my layers and heated gear I looked like the Michilan Man.

Seattle wasn't too bad for snow or ice but once I hit Lynnwood it got bad. Many of the roads I had to traverse were covered in snow and ice. I made it but decided to leave my bike there at the dealer until the weather warmed just a bit. The last thing you want to do is ride on a new tire in bad conditions. Tires tend to have a coating that can make them slippery already.

So my baby is sitting at the dealer. I miss him already.

Well it's still winter in Seattle. It's snowed, rained and flooded. But today its sunny and 45 degrees. So we went riding on the Peninsula. Oh so nice to ride for a day.

Neah Bay ride

Neah Bay, Washington is the most northwestern point in the lower United States.

This morning at 8am some friends and I are riding to Neah Bay and then back. We're starting at the West Seattle Fauntleroy ferry.

The day started out kinda funky. Was on the ferry but as soon as we needed to rev up my battery wouldn't start. So I had to roll the bike out into the Ferry terminal and look at the battery. I have a Gerbing battery connection attached and a Cigarette lighter (to charge my devices) also attached.

I disconnected those from my battery posts and the bike started up. Need to investigate that.

The rest of the ride was wonderful except for some of the traffic. Got home by 10 pm.

Day after the trip

So back and relaxing today after the trip. It was a great trip, some drama but over all vey good.

Things I learned:
1. Don't read your work email while on vacation, can ruin it.
2. Get a SPOT GPS tracking device, on of the best purchses made.
3. I suck at camping.
4. Thermarest sleeping pads aren't great.
5. Tents are not easy unless you practice setting them up.
6. Garmin GPS NUVI REALLY blows when on a motorcycle. The glare no matter how you try and fix it makes the device useless.
7. Love my new cigerrete lighter 12 volt to charge my devices.
8. Love my friends.
9. Love riding.
10. My butt hurts, need a softer seat.
11. Love Camelback water backpack
12. Check out Touratech, got a great dry bag there. Worth the money.

So funny thing we were supposed to camp last night but when we finally got to our destination all the campgrounds AND all the hotels/motels were booked in Sandpoint. It seems they're having a 10 day fair.

So we found lodging in Bonners Ferry, a town 35 minutes away.

We had a 2 bed room with 6 people & a dog sleeping in it. The room was maybe 350 sq ft.

So it was a tight squeeze. But I slept pretty well.

We're starting our day with getting gas, checking our tires and grabbing something to nosh on.

Planning for a trip

So a couple of my motorcycle friends have nudged me towards taking a 4 day ride to and back from Montana. Very exciting, except I don't camp.

So this will be a very new experience for me. I'm a little nervous. Not about bears or wildlife, but more around cleanliness. I mean I'm not used to crapping in the woods. I'm also a twice a day shower person.

I've gone out and gotten what I've been told are the essentials. Wow, not cheap.

We leave tonight at 6pm. So I'm pretty close to being all packed.

So once a month wedged between two bars in the Seattle Ballard Neighborhood a gathering of motorcyclists get together. I believe it started with Cafe Racers but has grown into an interesting collection of off beat motorcycle; cafe racers, choppers, bobbers, race biked, Nortons, etc....

The collection of people and the comradary, drinking and bike gazing and drooling make the event a blast.

Last night was great. One of the biggest turnouts I've seen.

West Seattle's Brickyard BBQ

Ok, so a week ago there was a West Seattle fair with tons of great bands playing. Some friends and I decided to grab some grub and I took them to street that had two restaurants to choose from, one, called Porterhouse, I'd been to and is very good.

Across the street was a BBQ joint, called Brickyard BBQ, I had never been to but liked the fact motorcycles seemed to line the street in front. So my friends and I of course chose the BBQ. I have to tell you the food was great, the people friendly and attentive. I highly recommend it, especially when it's beautiful out and you can sit outside.

2010 Seattle Summer has Sucked!

Ok, that's a bit harsh. Compared to the rest of the country we've been blessed that it's cool and we do get some rain which is our City mascot. But this summer has been especially drizzly, probably since we had a very light winter.

But I hear (though my faith in our weather people is very shaky) that we will have warm temps this coming week and going into July, let's hope so.

I haven't written in ages due to a new job, busy life and being lazy about it. I will try and do better.

On a good note I got my Harley back with new drag bars and new grips and footpegs. I'll post some pics soon.

Northwest End of Winter Ride

While much of the United States is dealing with difficult weather here in the Northwest we've been blessed with favorable conditions. This Saturday is the annual End of Winter ride to Mount Saint Helens. I've never been so pretty excited.

Since the Harley is in the shop I'll be taking my VTX 1800. It will be a great chance to connect with many of the riding groups around Washington.

Crazy Month

Ok, this month has been crazy and so I haven't been able to post here.

To start out with I was in a motorcycle accident. I slammed my Harley into a truck who made a left in front of me. Luckily for the most part I am ok. My bike however sustained $4000 in damages. Yes I am very sad. I visited it at the repair shop. The bike won't be finished for 8 weeks from the time they get the money in their bank account.

Now the other person was ticketed and deemed at fault for not failing to yield. So I am fighting with the other driver's insurance, Pemco. They of course are trying to pay as little as possible. We will see.

One interesting fact I've learned is that my motorycle insurance does not have Personal Injury Protection. It seems Washington State does not mandate it. So if I was to run off the road, cause the accident, hit a deer, etc... I would have to rely on my work insurance. This troubles me so I am looking for something that would suppliment what I have. I'll keep you updated.

This month I am also purchasing a condo in a trendy Seattle neighborhood. I'm pretty excited as it will be new and a change. And frankly I'm tired of weeding at my house. I've neglected my yard for motorcycling during the spring and summer months. What is very cool about this condo complex si they have designated underground motorcycle parking. This was implemented by the Home Owners Associations and the spots painted after the building went up. I'm very impressed.

This past weekend I got on my other bike and did a ride with my group. Gotta get back on the horse as they say.

Getting Back to Basics

I'm a big believer that no matter what level rider you are, we can all benefit from a refresher of the basics. I often forget those tenants that make up good riding; like moving your head to look where you want to go, proper use of your "Friction Zone", and an understanding of how to use your brakes and when.

So I have been trying to have twice a year practice classes for my Meetup group. This past weekend I had one scheduled. Thankfully the weather was amazing.

We first met up and had a bg potluck and watched a video. This was a great time to bond, talk about what we are seeing and ask questions of each other. Afterwards we rode over to a local large parking lot I often use when I want to practice because motorcycle classes used to be given there and the paint markings for course work are still visible.

We had an amzing turnout, around 45 people of varying degrees of experience. This proved to us that there is a large interest in safety and judging from the sessions even experienced riders have issues with some of the course work and so can always learn and improve. Unfortunatly it's the ones that think they are too experienced and not humble enough to admit they could learn that worry me.

I had multiple coaches to help me set up and guide the riders. It was a big group effort. We all worked out what we wanted to practice and helped each other do it better. There were lessons to be learned by me.

First, make sure you have enough cones. I expected one member to bring 30 cones as promised but he never showed up. I had 5 cones but this limited the amount of practice areas down to one. Second, set up your frame work prior to getting there. I had some guides but really took a cowboy approach, I will change that next time. And make sure you set some rules ahead of time. Many of the riders started riding without helmets. The last thing we want is someone hurt.

Eveyone had a great time and the group went off on a big ride afterwards. Check out the pictures below.

Sunny & Warm in February

Ok, so most of the country is really cold and the weather is crap. But for some reason Seattle has been wonderful, thank you Senior El Niño.

Ok, I haven't written in a long time, bad me. I was writing but hadn't posted yet. Well this past weekend 33 of my biker friends from our local Meetup group decided to get out there and take advantage of the incredible weather by taking a day ride around Camano Island. We started out in Seattle at 10am, collected our group and rode off North. Though the weather is sunny the morning air is still cold enough to see your breath. Since no clouds hang overhead throughout the night the days heat dissapates. Talk about "Every Cloud has a Silver Lining".

Now with 33 riding members keeping everyone together can be challenging. We designated captains and most everyone knew where we were going.

After Marysville some of us got disconnected from the larger group due to traffic lights. I was Sweep, meaning I was the last one to follow to make sure we didn't loose anyone and no one needed help.

Eventually we caught up with the group at the final destination. Lunch at the beach. Some of us, including me forgot our lunches and so hit a small cafe for lunch. The poor waitress was overwhelmed with all the customers she couldn't keep up. Her attitude was a bit rough I think due to her stress.

Some of us headed towards Seattle around 2pm hitting the back roads. Excellent day!

12th Annual Teddy Bear Run

I've been bad at posting lately. Work and some recent illness has kept me occupied.

Today though there is a great charity ride called the Teddy Bear Run. This ride is to benefit the children going through surgery at the Auburn Regional Medical Center. As I've stated before, for all the bad press motorcyclists get they are actually a very giving bunch.

My Meetup group has 40+ riders going, all bringing teddy bears for the kids. Due to being under the weather I couldn't go but gave my intended bear to another rider to deliver for me.

This reminds us that we can do little things to make other lives happier!

Now Trikes are interesting to me. Not necessarily anything I would get myself unless my balance really sucked or I'd hit my older years where keeping the bike upright meant more strength than I had. But some love them. I see many of them on the roads as well as the new Can-Am Spyders. But as I was surfing I came across the Zeel Design Bobsterer Trike. Wow, ok I'd give it up for this Trike. It's really hot!

Ok, so most of the country is getting hit with torrential rain or snow but the Pacific Northwest is doing pretty good. This week its felt like Spring has arrived. Of course to the dismay of skiers but to the joy of motorcyclists. We are all out on the roads enjoying the 60 degree temps and sunny conditions. Paws are dry and plants are starting to bloom (boy are they gonna be disappointed once Winter hits again). I’m just enjoying it all.

How I spent X-mas Eve

So I haven't written in a bit. Not because I didn't want to but because of work and life....don't take it so hard.

So the first thing that comes to mind was my Christmas eve. Now I haven't really found Christmas eve to be that exciting for me. I don't celebrate X-mas. But this year was probably the best I've had in 15 years.

Why? Because I spent it with friends in the most unusual way.

The day was beautiful. I rode my Harley all day long and then into the evening to celebrate the night at a seedy bar in a Seattle neighborhood called Queen Anne. If you know Queen Anne, then you also know it's pretty difficult to call anything there seedy, it's kinda an upscale part of town.

This "Seedy" bar was very small. Just a small oval bar and two pool tables, tables & chairs lining the wall. Now my friends are part of the Motorcycle meetup group I'm a member of. The plan was this. Meet at this bar and play wind up toy races.

Race divisions:
1. Fastest
2. Modified, make ur own or pimp one out
3. Blinged out wind up
4. Wind up looks most like its owner
5. X rated
6. Not a wind up?
7. Cheater, meaning who cheats best( be a moving toy fit on the bar with other toys no gas, fire

10. Congenial, pity award

Many of us hit a local shop called The Great Wind-up , a fun little place in Pikes Market where you can be a kid again.

Gossip tells me that we called ahead to the manager but he or she never told the bartender because he's the grumpy scrooge type and they wanted to piss him off. Not sure if that's the truth but its funny to think about. He actually seemed rather nice to me.

When I got there food platters were laying across one side of the bar for our group. Nice selection. 19 motorcycle junkies congregated at this pub, laughing, eating, drinking of course and running wind up toy races on the pool tables.

It was a blast. You would put a dollar down for each race you entered. Generally 4 people across. The money was donated at the end of the night to the Fallen Motorcycle rider fund.

The evening ended with everyone stuffing their toys in the overnight bag I brought so I could deliver the toys to the Union Gospel Church the next day.

What an excellent way to spend the holiday. Best ever!

I'm a big fan of custom bikes as may be apparent by what I post here. Though I have the mechanical capability of turtle I do appreciate what I see. I have started checking out a Blog called Helmet Hair which showcases many custom bikes. The only thing that bugs me about this blog and others is the constant advertising blitz. A few is cool but there is a point of too much. But other than that there are some great bikes on here. Check it out!

Seattle International Motorcycle show

I've been bad about posting over the past week. Call it holiday angst or just lazy.

This past weekend the International Motorcycle show came to Seattle. This was my first year so I had nothing to compare it to. Many of my fellow riders tell me it was much smaller this year. That's too bad but obviously due to the economy. Word out is that many of the small vendors couldn't afford a booth this year.

I met up with some members from my Motorcycle Meetup.com group on a cold 24 degree Saturday morning at a nearby Starbucks. Fortunately, all of us had dressed appropriately. Armed with my heated gear plugged in I was ready to roll.

The ride over was sunny. When we got to the venue motorcycle parking was right in front and free…as it should be! There were enough bikes to gaze upon and enjoy in the parking area. To my surprise the event organizers made allowances for rider's gear by having a "Gear Check" area, smart!

Now personally I thought the show had a lot to see. At least two hours worth. From cruisers to sports bikes and even some tricked out scooters (see below in the pics). Got to see the new VROD Muscle, very nice if you are going for that sporty look. Lots of choppers which I love. I entered multiple contests to try and win one of those choppers, fingers and toes crossed, but I’ll just probably wind up with a ton of spam from Progressive and Allstate agents who hosted the giveaways.

One specifically interesting booth was set within the Harley show area. Basically this company sells a variety of handlebars. But what they did was take a Harley and modify it so that they could switch out handle bars with brakes, clutch, and mirrors attached very easily. Slide in the new bars, sit on the bike and see what feels most comfortable. I thought that was a smart concept. Now I wish they had different bikes models to see the differences.

The show was well worth the $12 I paid to get in. I'll be back next year because what else are you gonna do in the winter time?

The Giving Motorcyclist

As I've become more and more involved with the Motorcycle Community I've realized motorcyclists are very giving people. There is a tradition to go on motorcycle "Runs" that raise money for different causes. I've been to a few as I could make them. Motorcyclists get a bad rap when the reality is most are really good people.

A good motorcycle seat makes all the difference, statement not opinion. If you have a comfortable seat, life is really good on your bike. Nothing is worse than a seat that is ill fitting, uncomfortable, and only allows you to ride a short period. I mean what's the point? My Honda VTX has a back rest and WOW, did it change my biking life. I can go 10 hours in the seat and still feel my legs and back without whimpering in pain. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older but I don't think I am alone in this revelation. I've spoken to multiple motorcycle owners who have back rests on their bikes and they also concur that they will never return to the traditional style motorcycle seat.

Now my Harley has more of a chopper style and so a back rest wouldn't fit it's look and feel. However that's not to say I can't have my seat customized for both comfort and look, which I plan to do as soon as the change in my piggy bank get's high enough. I might find a way to add a subtle curve that can act as a back rest. Example below from Jeffrey Phipps Custom Saddles

So I've been toying with the idea of creating a motorcycle club (MC). To my knowledge we only have one in the Pacific Northwest, BorderRiders, which really suprises me. I've checked out that club once and didn't feel a connection.

I want a club where members come from all parts of the Gay community, a true GLBT motorcycle club for Seattle and the surrounding areas. I'd like to see educational classes for safety, mechanics and anything else motorcycle related. Let's have a monthly social event where we hang out and build relationships. I ride cruisers but would like to ride with sportsbikes, BMWs, cruisers, choppers, cafe racers, etc..

And of course ride. I foresee planned rides every weekend, some afternoons and evenings during the summer months for advanced, intermediate, and novices. I hope we will have many members stepping up to lead multiple rides for everyone to choose from. Including some over-nighters or longer touring rides. Charity work would be a great addition to the clubs mission.

I'd like to avoid a fetish or specialized club based on leather, S&M, age groups, male or female, etc... It should be all inclusive. The focus being on riding and that you identify as gay. Everyone is there for all members to lend a hand.

Most importantly a kick ass name and logo so we can sport some hot jackets :)

One concern I have is the motorcycle community a large. I would like to see us involved with the overall motorcycle community but since I perceive it as mostly straight and not open to the gay orientation I hesitate around what that interaction would look like.

Man I'm Chapped!

Among the motorcycle communities your gear is an important safety precaution as well as a symbol of your style and attitude. Sportsbike riders tend to have a tight armored textile or leather jacket and pant combo with bright colors in a contemporary style if not a futuristic flavor. BMW riders have a similar style but with less of the colorful flare however the cloths tend to be upscale and can be costly. Cruisers like Harley bikes, Honda VTXs, Kawasaki Vulcans, etc.. tends toward more of the Easy Rider style, black leather jackets, leather gloves, dew rags, and leather chaps.

I ride two cruiser style bikes and the more I'm in the motorcycle community the more I am leaning towards that style. Now one of my favorite things to do is shop, yep I'm a stereotype. And so during the summer months when I was riding every weekend with my group the more I began thinking about leather chaps. I have armored textile riding pants already, great for wet weather and the cold. But in the summer time it can get too hot. I've been riding in just my jeans and no other leg protections. Not very good if I lay down the bike. But am I really a leather chap kinda guy or gay?

The beginning the leather chaps began over a hundred years for equestrian riders. The cowboy wore them while out on the range protecting their legs. It wasn't until the mid-1900's that motorcyclists appropriated that leg protection idea as well as the saddlebag concept.

Now chaps can say many things about a person. It can imply the person is a motorcyclist and is rough & tough, bad ass rider. However in the gay community it can also mean a fascination with leather and the S&M scene. That's fine if it's your leaning though it doesn't tend to be mine. I like leather more as a fashion statement, quality clothing and protection while riding. So as I contemplate getting chaps I have to decide why I want them and what it says about me.

Will chaps be comfortable? Will chaps be cooler than full textile armored pants? Will they protect me? And most importantly will they look good on me? I guess I'll have to see.

Zen Is Eluding Me

I tried, I mean I really tried. Step 1, get a motorcycle, Step 2 ride that motorcycle, Step 3 read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig, Step 4 learn how to fix your own motorcycle and find deep philosophical meaning in it.

I attempted Step 3 with diligence. Every night before connecting head with pillow I'd lay in bed, flip on the reading light and reach for this classic 1974 thoughtful book. I've read about quarter of it and reading it prior to turning in for the night definetly did wonders for my sleep, it basically hastened it.

Maybe I don't have the chops for this thought provoking tale. I really was enjoying his riding reflections. Making his way across the country side with his son sitting behind him and two friends up ahead. The author relays to the reader riding challenges a motorcyclist can appreciate, from misbehaved weather coming upon suddenly to the sleepy crawl across a long haul of landscape sameness. In each, there is a personal understanding of yourself and the elements, as he often puts forth, when you ride a motorcycle you are a part of the landscape and the outside world and feeling cagers (car drivers) can't appreciate.

I too have been on a long ride only to be trying to outrace a storm which eventually spills overhead. I've also experienced the check and double check in my mind as to whether I brought all the correct riding gear I would need. And I've driven a long stretch fighting back the dropping of my eyelids. This part of his story's narrative I followed closely, I'm even charmed by the dated material which hasn't seen cell phones, CDs, DVDs, or hybrid vehicles yet. Probably because I grew up in that time. The travel story is simplistic and human in nature and I can enjoy his ride without thinking too much.

Yet when he starts pontificating I am now fighting the sleep that suddenly overwhelms me. Face to face I can philosphize with some of the best and yet written down in this book it pulls me away from the simplier story of getting from here to there.

Funny, if I think about it his metaphysical overlay its probably saying pretty much the same thing....getting from where we currently are to where we might want to go.

Please don't let me deter you from reading the book as it has delighted many in the past. I just think I need to skip over to Step 4, learn how to fix your own motorcycle and find deep philosophical meaning in it.

Anyone know of a good Sci Fi/Fantasy novel I can pick up and loose myself within? Whatever we do, it's all about enjoying the ride.

The internet is the Holy Grail for the niche' world.

I can find almost any topic that may pop into my head at 3:00 am in the morning. If there was a book I loved as a child I can find it with enough time and details. Many online e-Commerce marts have thrived on this fact. Do you know how many candle shops there are on the web? Then include sexual gratification fetishes for all fixations and you have a lot of happy individuals (not that I would know). The web both increases isolation and community, allowing you to spend hours alone surfing for like minded individuals to bond with and then chat with them from your studio apartment in your latex sailor outfit.

I don't know how many people out there know about Meetup.com but that's where I found my sailor group. In all seriousness Meetup.com has become a great way to leave the solitary world and get out and connect with real humans. I've been lucky to find several motorcycle groups in my area. I rode 7000 miles in 4 months with these people, made good friends and learned a lot from those more experienced than myself.

Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, and Twitter are other sites for social networking but I don't believe they provide the same opportunity for you to shake a hand, look across the table into someone's eyes, or experience the same moment with another person like Meetup.com and other social activity sites allow.

We can either expand our world or create borders around it. I'm learing to enlarge it with a tool that keeps redefining my interests and perceptions.

A Sunday Opportunity

As I sit on my couch typing this entry the logs are crackling in the fire and I'm reflecting on a great Sunday. At the last minute an afternoon ride was arranged for my Meetup Motorcycle group. The weather forecast was for clear skies and 50 degree temperatures. An opportunity any self respecting Seattleite knows to take advantage because the day before it was pouring rain and tomorrow it will probably do that and more.

Though I still have a lingering cold and I've neglected my front yard shaming my neighborhood I decided I had to go on this ride. I threw on my warm cloths with long johns underneath, rubbed my dog Puck on the head and jumped on my motorcycle heading towards the meetup spot.

Often on days like this as I ride away from my house I'm thinking whether I chose the right gear; leather jacket instead of the textile armored jacket, a zip up fleece, armoured over-pants, thick gloves (but tossed the lighter ones in the saddlebags just in case), and the 3 quarter helmet instead of the full faced helmet. Typically, 15 minutes from my house I remember I left my ear plugs at home. I've recently promised myself I would start wearing them because I really like my hearing a lot and statistics say riders loose their hearing after prolonged exposure to the wind and exhaust pipe noise. And my exhaust pipes are very loud, proudly I annoy the neighbors at 6:30 am when heading out for work due to those same pipes. As any biker will tell you, loud pipes make safer riders. Cars are more aware of you due to those pipes.

The group was meeting first at a Starbucks up North and then we'd connect up with more of our riders at an eastside Starbucks.....hey is Seattle, what do you expect? At the first gathering there was around seven of us but our final count on the eastside would put us at 20, nice size group for a ride.

We hit back roads all the way to the eastside, through nice twisties. Twisties are those twists and turns you get on the country roads of Washington. They are the lifeblood of the motorcyclist, getting your adrenaline soaring as you slide through the curves. Some part of the roads still have moisture on them if still in the shade so you have to be very careful your aren't hitting the turns too fast or you can loose traction. I can feel my tire slip just a little so I have to let up on the throttle and apply a bit of brake. Every time I go on these rides I know if just the slightest miscalculation on my part and I can get very hurt. You're in control of your bike but not the road, so it becomes the unknown factor and creates the excitement.

As any of my friends can tell you I'm a control freak. So I like having control of the bike and testing my skill against the imperfections of the road. You just never know where there might be some gravel, leaves, a bump or ditch around the next corner. So you have to always be looking far enough ahead. As I've heard said before, if you are looking down there is no way to stop or make corrections because you are already there.

We picked up the rest of the bikers, some men and some women, several cruisers and a few sportsbikes. All are made welcome. Back on the roads I am always fascinated by the beauty and rustic scenery I see zipping past. Multi-colored leaves on large old trees, weathered farm houses and Norman Rockwell barns, rolling hills with horses and cows, tractors, cars and ATVs lining front yards. In front of us Mt. Rainier is in the distance. As a boy from Arizona where cactus is all the rage this kind of landscape is still foreign and breathtaking to me. I love Washington State and specifically Seattle.

After riding for an hour and a half we stop at a very small bar that tends to cater to motorcyclists. Today there are many out on the roads taking advantage as we are. When riding past each other we make the customary hand signal, a two finger peace sign point downward. Motorcycling is both solitary and communal. You ride with yourself, in your own thoughts but share the road with others who have your passion either in passing or in groups.

The bar is filled with people and our group orders drinks. Now I have no problem with drinking alcohol but I try not to drink and ride a motorcycle. First, I'm a lightweight, one beer will have me very buzzed even though I'm a 200 lb guy...ok maybe 208 lbs these days, I'm working on loosing that. Anyway, secondly managing a motorcycle takes all of your concentration and so I don't like to be less then my best when riding. So with another rider, a woman, I don't know, we decide to hit the cafe across the way and have hot chocolate. Man it was good after riding in the cold. I got to make a new friend and have chocolate, that's perfect for me.

After the group finishes their drink we get back on the road heading back to Seattle via those back roads again. We lost much of the group as many went on their own to head home. Those in my now small group all are heading the same way. So with the Fall Back daylight savings time in effect it's getting dark out. Riding in the dark with wet and dry roads is more scary then daytime riding because you really can't see what you're up against. Caution is the keyword here. It's gotten a lot colder and I had on my thinner gloves which I found I was regretting. With thicker gloves you gain warmth but loose the finer sensitivity to your hand controls and grip. But does that really matter if you can no longer feel your fingers as I was starting to develop.

Riding back there is a full moon, it's amazing to see as the light starts dissapearing. At this point I'm ready to be home and having dinner. But still the leader of the group takes us through a route only he seems to know. We trust he knows where he is going as we follow and focus on the road.

Eventually we hit a main highway I recognize and I know we aren't far from home. At a specific stop light I wave my goodbye and gun my engine shooting out ahead. I get home and of course forgot to leave any lights on. My poor dog is laying in the dark house wondering when he'll get fed.

It was a nice day, nice ride and a nice relaxing evening with Pad Thai Chicken, 3 stars and a fireplace roaring.

Insurance is a necessary pain. But I always feel like I'm getting taken advantage of in the fine print and backend fees.

So I decided when I got the new Harley I'd shop around. My insurance company is State Farm but when I asked them what kind of deal I could get they told me they didn't give deals for motorcycles even though I have my house, my car, my two bikes with them. Nothing like treating your loyal customers like trash.

So I called around first to Progressive, then to AllState and even an Insurance broker but none could give me a better deal. Now State Farm charges by the size of the engine. My bikes are pretty big, the Honday is 1800cc and the Harley 96 cubes which translates to about 1500cc.

Last on my list was Gieco. They came in just on the bikes a whopping $200 cheaper for the year. Wow! So I decided to move my bikes over. Now on my car I was paying around $150 per month at State Farm. So with the bikes I was at around $275 per month. The concern I had with switching my car was that 3 years ago I had an accident and sadly it was deemed my fault, though personally I don't agree, but I won't get into that. I didn't think I could get a better deal.

State Farm hadn't dropped the accident from my premiums but when asked, Gieco would and so I went from $150 at Statefarm to $103 at Gieco. Total for car and bikes at Gico wound up being $216 per month. Very nice!

I promptly called State Farm and cancelled my insurance for those three vehicles. It happened to be on the day they pull from my account and so they couldn't stop that. When I did get the check back I was short $25. They claim that they weight their motorcycle insurance higher in the summer and so you pay more then, hence the less funds. Sounds shifty to me.

Now State Farm said that if I came back in 39 days, (yeah weird number but they say thats the only way insurance companies can ignore past driving history and treat you as a new customer. State law or something) then the accident would fall off and my premiums would be cheaper but probably couldn't beat Gieco. Days later State Farm calls back and lo and behold they tell me they can get me my insurance down for all three vehicles to $150 per month if I come back in 39 days.

Do I go back? What if they decide to raise it in a year? We'll see in 39 days!

Is the Riding Season Over?

So here in Seattle, Autumn has jumped on the bike and is racing ahead. It's scattered multi-colored leaves everywhere making the roads both beautiful and dangerous. I'm an all seasons rider. Well to be honest this is the second season I'll put that to the test. Last year I road as much as possible even in the rain. I get antsy when I can't ride. And now that I have two bikes it'll be that much harder to not want to take one of them out for a roll.

This year though I'm gonna try and be better prepared for the cold. I was very good last year and dressed accordingly, winter wear and rain gear. However I think I'll be getting some heated items. My fingers get really cold no matter what gloves I wear. They hurt and are numb by the time I get to work in the morning. So I am headed for the heated gloves section of the motorcycle shop. I hear Gerbing gloves are very good but I'll compare.

Because the enjoyable days are numbered for riders during the winter my meetup group went for a ride yesterday. It was sunny but cold. Yet still the colors were amazing. It was a great rider taking us from the Lake Forest area through back roads all the way to Carnation. There were 18 of us, some riding sportsbikes, some cruisers, and some choppers. I rode my new Harley Rocker C.

At one point I was traveling a little too close behind my buddy around a turn. He stopped a little fast and so I put on my brakes. My 240 fat back tire slide to the left, locked up and then it righted itself. Thankfully, I was able to keep control of the bike. The bikers behind me told me once we stopped that they saw smoke come from the tires. Whats funny is one of my friends ask right before our last gas up stop if I had trouble with the bigger 240 tire. i said no, hasn't effected my riding at all. I told him he jinxed me.

Other than that one item the ride was great. So much beauty in the Northwest. It never ceases to amaze me. Hopefully it won't be the last nice weekend ride until Spring.

Ok, so I've written blogs before and even have a Twitter account BUT I just don't have a lot to say except internally. I say a lot internally. My mother was an optimist and my father a hardcore gun toting pessimist. So I'm a Pessimistic Optimist. Basically I wanna kill myself but will wait until tomorrow because something good might happen today.

Who am I? I am a 42 year old High Tech Product Manager who happens to be Gay, has an English Bulldog, and has fallen in love with riding motorcycles.

I used to ride while in college at the University of Arizona. I loved it then but I left Tucson and traveled the world and just never felt it was the right time to get a cycle. When I moved to Seattle 11 years ago I thought Well it friggin rains here so no way will I ever get a motorcycle I tend to be a fickle shopaholic who is trying to be financially smart, so I'm at odds with myself. Two years ago I thought I wanted to try Mt. Biking because all my friends do it and I thought I should give it a shot. I had to buy a really nice bike, a Kona Hoff! I used it for a summer and beat myself up falling through wooded tracks. I haven't gotten back on but am being stubborn about selling it, who knows in a Apocalypse I might need to peddle outta here.

Anyway, so about a year ago during the whole gas crunch I was watching the news and they spoke about how many motorists were getting scooters to save money. I thought well why not a motorcycle, I can save oodles of money. So I went and took the class to get reacquainted with riding and to get my riders permit. At the time a friend of mine owned a motorcycle shop. He's actually has my dog's littermate and they used to play all around the motorcycles with their toys. I was always worried they would knock the bikes over like Dominoes. Never happened thankfully.

Once i got done with the class I went to see my friend and he introduced me to a red '03 Honda American Classic Edition 750CC for only $3000 with 12,000 miles on it. I bought it but was really scared to drive it out of his garage. Finally I got it out of there and rode it all through August until March. My friends and coworkers thought I was crazy for riding in the winter and thru the rain. Yeah I agree with them but I couldn't imagine not riding my bike. I would start getting restless when I went more than 2 days without riding. It was cold and wet but I survived.

In March I was cruising through my local Honda/Harley dealer. They of course hit me up and asked if I was looking for bike. I said no BUT IF I was then it would have to be under $8000. They brought me into the back and presented me with a '02 Honda VTX 1800s with so much chrome I had to shield my eyes from the glare. It also had Vance & Hines pipes that when you launched the bike it had a deep loud rumble which set off car alarms and made neighbors call the police on you. I took it for a ride. It was a big bike, like an SUV of bikes. For those who don't know 1800 CCs is one of the highest engines you can go to and the higher the CCs the larger the bike. So I had a lot of respect for this bike going from a 750CC to an 1800CC is a large, crazy jump. I got on the bike and it felt like sliding into a glove, just right for me. But very difficult to handle when you don't know how to. It takes a lot of experience maneuvering such a large bike. I left the dealership after haggling them down and trading in my bike for a good price.

As soon as I left the dealership it was pouring rain outside and very windy. Just my luck I was in a squall without the proper gear on a bike I knew very little about. I couldn't make lefts or rights for fear of dumping it. From where I was it took me an hour to get home, soaked to the bone and cursing my stupidity. Since then in 4 months I put 7000 miles on it and love it to death. I can handle it like a pro. I get tons of comments about how huge and shiny it is. Everyone loves my pipes and their sound.

I joined a Motorcycle Meet-up group here in Seattle and ride almost every weekend. I commute to work daily on it. So why did I then buy a Harley?

I've heard a lot of great things about Harleys. You go to any motorcycle meeting and there are Harleys everywhere. They are kinda like their own club. Who doesn't want to belong? One thing I could never understand was how all of these people who looked like they couldn't afford their apartment or have a good job or even eat that day, they all had Harleys? Ok I know, I know total stuck-up judgment call, I should be ashamed of myself! Ok so Harleys are NOT cheap. I asked around, politely how so many could afford an expensive vehicle? Here is what I was told. Harley owners really care more about their motorcycles then their cars. What most people would spend on their car Harley owners get cheap cars and spend all on their cycles. This made total sense to me. My car is paid off and I make a very good living. So I started looking.

None of the Harleys did much for me. Compared to my massive Honda VTX everything else looked small or felt cramped. There were a few with style that I liked but nothing screamed I had to have it until I saw the Rocker C. I have this big hard on for Choppers. I think they look way hot! Nice bike fat tire, sweet handle bars and stretch out fork. I love them. The Rocker C is Harley's version of one. Fat 240 back tire, single seat (with a trick passenger seat that flips out), beautiful tank, stylish handle bars and a stretched out front fork. I saw it, I wanted it, I couldn't/shouldn't afford it.

So I decided I couldn't get it but before going to bed one night I put out into the Universe that somehow I was going to get that bike someday. The next day I was surfing Craigslist. The first search for Rocker C brought up an '08 Black Rocker C in mint condition with less than 900 miles on it for $13,900. Now Rocker C's go for $19,000 - $20,000 new and used $18,000. I compared prices and couldn't find anything that cheap. The catch was that it was an hour away in Mt.Vernon at a Honda dealership. So I called the salesman's number in the ad It was a Monday and usually they aren't open. He agreed to meet me. I went up with a buddy of mine and test drove it. Now compared to my bike it was very small, like a scooter. I had lots of doubts so I turned it down. If I was gonna buy a bike it had to be the one, I figured.

After days of looking and test riding other Harleys I didn't find any model I liked. The Rocker C kept screaming the back of my mind. So yes I got it. Got them down to $13,500 which is pretty much wholesale. So needless to say I have two motorcycles in my garage now. One for touring (my VTX) and one for cruising and looking cool, My Harley Rocker C). I'm soooo happy!!
